Are Midwives the same as a birth doula?

Midwives are trained medical professionals who specialize in individual care for the pregnant person. They can perform prenatal test, checkups, and  administer pain medication in low risk healthy pregnancies. If medical complications occur during labor midwives work with obstetricians to decide whether your care needs a different approach. Midwives are found in home birth, birth centers, and hospitals. They provide non-intervention birth and low intervention birth. Doula attend the birth as a emotional and physical support they are not stand ins for midwives. You should hire a doula whether birthing with a midwife or obstetrician.
